CCTV Camera Placement: A Coverage Plan That Actually Protects Your Property
Almost every CCTV conversation we have starts the same way: "I want four cameras." Sometimes six. It's rarely wrong as a starting budget, but it's the wrong starting question. The number of cameras should come out of a coverage plan — not the other way around. We've walked properties with eight cameras installed and still found the one gate, the one side passage, or the one dark corner that actually mattered left completely uncovered, because nobody planned the coverage before buying the hardware.
Start With a Walk-Through, Not a Shopping List
Before you think about camera specs, walk your property the way an intruder would — not the way a resident who already knows every shortcut would. Where are the actual entry points? Not just the front gate, but the side wall that's easy to scale, the back fence bordering an empty plot, the delivery gate that stays unlatched during the day. Every genuine entry point needs deliberate coverage; everywhere else is a bonus, not a priority.
This is also where most self-installed systems go wrong — cameras get mounted where it's structurally convenient (an existing pole, a wall with power nearby) rather than where the actual risk is. Convenience-driven placement is how you end up with excellent footage of your driveway and nothing at all of the side gate someone actually came through.
Height, Angle, and Nigeria's Sun
Camera height is a genuine trade-off. Too low and the camera itself becomes vulnerable to tampering or a well-aimed thrown object; too high and you lose the facial detail that actually makes footage useful for identification rather than just "a person was here." A general guide is roughly 2.5 to 3 meters — high enough to be out of easy reach, low enough to still capture a usable, front-on view of anyone approaching.
Backlight and glare deserve more attention than they usually get. A camera facing directly into the morning or afternoon sun — extremely common with east- or west-facing gates in Nigeria's climate — will silhouette anyone standing in front of it for a large part of the day, turning potentially critical footage into a dark outline. Angling cameras to avoid facing directly into the sun's path, or choosing units with genuinely good wide dynamic range, solves this before it becomes a problem you only discover after an incident.
Overlap Zones, Not Just Coverage Zones
A well-planned system has a small amount of deliberate overlap between cameras at the highest-risk points — the main entrance, a cash-handling area, a compound's main access road — so that if one camera is obstructed, tampered with, or simply has a bad angle at the critical moment, another one still has the shot. This isn't about buying more cameras everywhere; it's about being deliberate at the two or three points that matter most, and accepting lighter, non-overlapping coverage everywhere else.
Storage and Power: The Part That Gets Skipped
Cameras are only half the system. Where the footage actually goes — and whether it survives a power outage — matters just as much.
- Local storage (DVR/NVR) keeps footage on-site and doesn't depend on your internet connection, but it's vulnerable if the physical unit itself is stolen or damaged along with everything else.
- Cloud storage protects footage even if the hardware is compromised, but depends entirely on a stable internet connection to actually upload continuously — worth stress-testing before you trust it.
- Power backup is non-negotiable. A CCTV system that goes dark during every NEPA outage is a CCTV system that's blind for exactly the hours criminals are often most active. A small dedicated UPS for the recording unit and cameras is a modest cost against the alternative.
